United States and Pennsylvania History 1 Grade 9 Honors, CP 411 412

Placement in Honors is determined by standardized test scores, the placement test and department recommendation.

U.S. and Pennsylvania History (1865-1918) focuses on the people, places and events in our nation, and in particular the state of Pennsylvania, which have shaped and formed American society. Of special importance are the political principles, social values and cultural traditions that make our way of life unique among nations of the world.

World Cultures Grade 10 Honors, CP 421 422
Prerequisite for Honors: Average of 92 in Honors or 95 in CP US/PA History 1 and department recommendation. A summer project may be assigned.

World Cultures helps students learn more about themselves by learning about others. The lands and peoples of the western world are the focus of the course. Students study the geography, societies and ways of life of these people and how they fit into the world society of the 21st century.

United States and Pennsylvania History 2 Grade 11 Honors, CP 431 432
Prerequisite for Honors:
Current average of 92 in Honors or 95 in CP World Cultures and department recommendation. A summer project may be assigned.

U.S. and Pennsylvania History 2 (1915 to present) builds upon knowledge gained in the first course and emphasizes the emergence and growth of the United States as a world power. The growing role and responsibility of the citizen as a force in determining the future of the nation as it is confronted by the challenges of the 21st century are the focus of the course.

AP Western European History Grade 12 Advanced Placement 460
Prerequisite:
Average of 90 in United States and Pennsylvania History 2, general average of 90 in all other major subjects, and teacher recommendation. 

Modern European History encompasses the social, political, economic and cultural life of European nations from the 15th century to the present. It includes the study of events, movements and people who shaped or changed human history. In addition to the more traditional historic content, the course introduces the student to a wide range of historical materials and methods of study. All students taking this course are required to take the AP European History Examination. 

Applied Economics Grade 11,12 College Prep 442

Applied Economics explores the basic characteristics of the American economic system with emphasis on the role of private property, the price system and competition. It also demonstrates how fundamental economic concepts such as markets, economic incentives and opportunity cost operate in the American and other economic systems. Students learn about the free enterprise system and explore business opportunities. A fuller understanding of economics enables students to understand and to evaluate the US economy and to participate more successfully in the actual operation of the economy itself.

Introduction to Psychology/Citizen and the Law Grade 12 College Prep 444

Psychology is the scientific study of human behavior and mental activity. In this course, students study human development, intelligence, personality theory, abnormal behavior, therapeutic intervention and applied psychology. Through lectures, discussions, class exercises, film, assignments and examinations the students become familiar with the fundamentals of psychology.

Citizen and the Law provides an opportunity for students to learn the basic aspects of the law for their future use and for an understanding of the world around them. The course includes such topics as criminal law, apartment renting law and individual rights and freedoms.
