HOLY NAME HIGH SCHOOL
PEER LISTENING PROGRAM
"TALK ABOUT PROBLEMS"
(TAP)
Today's teenagers are often faced with problems, pressures and stress. Oftentimes they need someone to share their thoughts, feelings and actions. In many instances, the traditional receivers of information about teenage concerns and actions (parents, counselors, relatives, and neighbors) are secondary recipients of information. The primary receivers of such information are usually the teenagers' fellow peers: friends, classmates, teammates, etc.
In its commitment to the development of the whole person in a caring community
of faith, Holy Name High School, in conjunction with the Diocese of Allentown,
we have established a Peer Listening Program. It is called, "Talk About Problems."
TAP assumes that teenagers are more inclined to communicate with the peers, than
with adults. It also affirms that many of today's teens are capable of listening to
their fellow teenagers who bring to them significant concerns. TAP provides the
opportunity for teenagers to receive professional training to enable them to be
good peer listeners, to assist their peers in looking at options for solving their
problems and to provide information on referrals for professional help. TAP
members are not professional counselors. Their primary function is to act as
listening and referral agents. The training process helps to clarify their role.
