Student Council

 

Nature of the Organization

Student Council is the liaison between the Administration and members of the student body; it is a Council, not a government.  The club provides a variety of services for the school; it sponsors a diversity of activities for the students.  The organization consists of three bodies: the Executive Council, Class Presidents and Class Representatives.  The Executive Board consisting of Executive Council and Class Presidents, meet twice a month to prepare the agenda for full Council meetings.  The day is mutually agreed upon between the Board and the Moderator.  The entire Student Council meets on the first and third Wednesdays of each month beginning with the first Wednesday of October to the third Wednesday of May.

 

Executive Council

The Executive Council proper of Student Council consists of four offices:  President, Vice-President, Secretary and Chairman of Activities.

 

    The duties of the offices are specified in the Constitution of the Student Council of Holy Name.  This document states:

      President - Serves as President of the entire Student Body; calls all meetings of the Student Council; presides at all meetings of the Council; serves as mediator between the administration, faculty and the students; coordinates, supervises and oversees all Student Council services, programs and projects; makes all morning and afternoon announcements; represents Holy Name High School at all functions required by the office or requested by the administration.

      Vice President - Formally precedes morning announcements with a prayer and pledge of allegiance; oversees collection of homeroom absentee lists and distribution of materials to students; manages Council finances; keeps accurate and complete records of all Student Council checking account; oversees the use of all Student Council funds; assists the President in discharging the duties of the office; presides at meetings in the absence of the President; assumes any duties the President cannot perform, or requests.

       Secretary - Takes accurate and complete minutes at all meetings of Student Council; supplies all members of the Student Council with a copy of the minutes of every general meeting; posts the minutes of every general meeting of the Student Council on the Main Bulletin Board as well as the Student Bulletin Board in the cafeteria; supplies the administration and faculty with a copy of the Student Council minutes; handles all Student Council correspondence; keeps accurate record of attendance; prepares work schedules for all Council activities; keeps all records of the Student Council  

       Chairman of Activities - Initiates  and organizes activities for the school community during school as well as after school; informs the students through the public address system of events to be sponsored by the school, the results of special and athletic events, as well as activities involving students in the community; keeps students aware of school and community activities through updated bulletin boards; broadcasts timetables and procedures for all Council activities; prepares flyers and posters to promote Student Council activities.

 

Duties of Class Presidents

  •  Attend meetings of both the Executive Board as well as the entire Student Council

  • Faithfully represent the sentiments of their respective classes to Student Council

  • Serve as student - administration mediators in all matters pertaining strictly to their class

  • Work with the administration and / or faculty on all matters relative to their class

  • Assume the responsibility of conducting Council business in homerooms in teh event representatives are absent from full council meetings

  • Serve as student messengers among the administration, faculty and students

  • Assist in preparing all Council activities

  • Aid in setting up and removing all materials associated with Student Council activities as well as providing service, when the need arises, to others sponsoring school related programs

Duties of Class Representatives

  •  Attend all meetings of the entire Student Council.

  • Objectively report Council business, decisions, projects, programs to the homeroom to which they are assigned

  • Accurately report the views, opinions, suggestions of their classmates at Student Council meetings

  • Assist in preparing all Council activities

  • Aid in setting up and removing all materials associated with Student Council activities as well as providing service when the need arises, to others sponsoring school related programs
